Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents in California

Placenta, CA-Crash Kills Three at Orangethorpe Av & Melrose St

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), California ranks second in terms of the number of traffic accidents in the country. Generally, accidents happen in heavily trafficked areas or near intersections where people are making turns. Reckless driving, driving while distracted, and driving under the influence are common causes of collisions in California.

Despite significant reductions in alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in the past three decades, alcohol-impaired driving still accounts for a substantial percentage of traffic fatalities and injuries. A collision involving an alcohol-impaired driver caused a death every 50 minutes in the United States in 2016. In California, as of 2016, 1,059 people were killed in impaired collisions, up 16.2% from 911 in 2015. The highest number of alcohol-involved fatal and severe injuries were concentrated in southern and central California, with the greatest number in Orange County.
