Pedestrian Statistics in California

There has been a recent increase in pedestrian fatalities in the state of California.  In fact, Santa Ana, CA-Collision Kills Pedestrian on W. 1st St.California has the most pedestrian fatalities than any other state. California’s Office of Traffic Safety reports that deaths of pedestrians have made up at least 25% of collision fatalities over the last few years in the state. This means that one in every four pedestrians is killed by a driver. According to studies, on average, each year, nearly 14,000 pedestrians are injured, and there are 1,000 pedestrian deaths per year from motor vehicle accidents.

Fatalities involving pedestrians can be attributed to unsafe roads or lack of infrastructure for pedestrians to walk on, speeding drivers, and reckless driving behaviors, such as distracted or impaired driving. Most fatalities occur on multilane roads with speed limits between 45-50 miles per hour. Accidents are more likely if there are several entrance points onto roads, along with multiple lanes of turning traffic. The number of accidents can be reduced if motorists drive slower and make safety for all their number one priority.
