Long Beach, CA (August 18, 2020) – A pedestrian accident in the Long Beach area claimed one victim’s life on Saturday evening. At approximately 8:05 p.m., on August 15, the Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene of a pedestrian accident on Polynesian Drive.
Reports provided by the Long Beach Police Department’s Media Relations Division show that a 1-year-old child was exiting a rideshare vehicle with his father on Polynesian Drive near the intersection with Lei Drive. As the two exited the vehicle, it began to pull away. The 1-year-old boy was struck by the vehicle as it pulled away from the curb. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene of the crash and began to render aid on the child. The young boy was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the rideshare vehicle remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with law enforcement. At this time, the incident is under investigation with Collision Investigation Detective Brian Ekrem at the Long Beach Police Department.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the little boy who lost his life in this accident. Our thoughts are with them at this time.
Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in California
Statistics show that around 900 pedestrians lose their lives in traffic-related incidents throughout the state of California each year. These victims are particularly vulnerable to catastrophic and fatal injuries due to the fact that they do not have steel frames protected them out on the road. Small children, in particular, are especially vulnerable to life-threatening injuries due to their small and fragile sizes. After losing a small child in an accident, families are often overcome with grief. There are far fewer things worse than losing a loved one. Knowing that your loved one lost their life as a result of another person’s negligence just makes the situation even more difficult to accept.
Not only are the mental and emotional consequences of fatal pedestrian accidents devastating, but families are also left to pay thousands of dollars on funeral expenses, inherit stacking medical bills, and deal with an array of financial burdens after experiencing a tragic loss. Although it can seem like no amount of compensation can ever make us feel whole again after enduring an unexpected and tragic loss, having financial resources available to cover the economic and non-economic damages we face moving forward can help to alleviate some of the stress associated families endure. Working with a wrongful death attorney in California will ensure you are able to maximize your recovery and move forward.
